Kahurangi Estate

Kahurangi Estate is an established vineyard originally planted by Agnes and Hermann Seifried in the early 1970's and purchased in 1998 by the Day family who have changed the name to Kahurangi Estate.

Twenty-six acres are planted in five grape varieties being: Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer. All grafted on American rootstock from plantings. During the 1999 Vintage we harvested 114 Tonnes from the Estate.

The Kahurangi Estate vineyard is 33kms from Nelson C.P.O and a 35-minute drive from central Nelson. In terms of closer population areas it lies between Richmond and Motueka being a 15-minute drive from both centres.

Terralsole

The Terralsole Estate is a newcomer to the Montalcino scene. There are currently 12 hectares under vine but not all are in full swing in terms of production.

The first wine to be released is the Rosso di Montalcino D.O.C. 2001. The first Brunello from this estate will be the 2000 vintage on the market in 2005. As well as the authorized Sangiovese necessary for these two wines, the estate has planted Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Franc with a view to two Supertuscans; one 100% Syrah and a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The vines have an optimum exposition to the sun (hence the name of the estate, “Land of the Sun”) and a perfect ventilation thanks to the fact that they are planted on the slopes of a small hill.

The grapes are picked by hand and brought to the cellar in small crates in order to avoid squashing en route. The centralized position of the cellar means that the travel time for the grapes is reduced to a minimum. The extremely modern cellar has been designed to exploit the force of gravity where possible in order to limit the use of pumps and other stressful agents for the grapes. The vats have a computerized temperature control system thus allowing Terralsole Estate to maintain a cold maceration period for maximum extraction of bouquet, color and aromas. Each vat can be controlled individually.

During the harvest, a distinction is made between the grapes destined for Rosso di Montalcino and those destined for Brunello. The Rosso spends a total of eight months aging in wood. Part of the production spends these months in French oak barriques, while the other mature in 60 liter French tonneaux. The two versions of the same wine are then blended and bottled in a single bottling in order to allow bottle ageing for at least three months before sale. The Brunello spends two years in wood. The wine starts its aging in barriques and completes it in tonneaux (600 and 700 liter) in order to soften the tertiary aromas.

To fully understand the estate philosophy the only thing to do is to visit the property which is in a truly remarkable site. The gates are sculptures by artist Massimo Lippi, and the gravel path leads up to a small hill which offers an incredible 360 view of the surrounding countryside. A clue to the character of the owner, Mario Bollag, is in the choice of trees that surround his home, located directly above the cellar. An olive tree, a pine tree and a palm tree are juxtaposed and here we have the three threads of Mario’s nationality. He is a Swiss man who has been closely involved with Montalcino for over twenty years, with a link to Hawaii and Haiti. There is a high incidence of bicycles, pianos and artwork, and the attention to detail and the love of beauty that Mario has invested in functional spaces give an idea of the extent to which he cherishes this estate. The wines receive the same attention.
